Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Cervical Spinal Stenosis

Diagnosis:

Cervical spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the space in the spinal canal surrounding the spinal cord and subsequent compression placed on the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. The source of cervical spinal stenosis can vary but it is often a consequence of another condition such as arthritis, bone spurs, or a herniated disc. Cervical spinal stenosis is a serious cause of neck pain, particularly in older individuals, with age being the single greatest risk factor for its development. While some affected individuals may be asymptomatic, others may experience pain, weakness and/or numbness with varying degrees of severity. Genesis Orthopedics & Sports Medicine provides numerous treatments based on the severity of symptoms.

Treatment Options:

Cortisone

In cases of cervical spinal stenosis that cause serious inflammation that isn’t relieved with the use of over-the-counter medication, cortisone can be used prudently for symptom relief.

NSAIDs

Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications can provide tremendous relief to the inflammation and pain associated with spinal stenosis. While medication will relieve the symptoms, proper care must be taken to ensure the cervical spinal stenosis isn’t exacerbated. Genesis Orthopedics & Sports Medicine recommends treatment plans for spinal stenosis on an individual basis.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy for cervical spinal stenosis is focused on the recovery and strengthening of the neck to decrease the likelihood of future injury. Genesis Orthopedics & Sports Medicine will create a customized therapy plan based on the recovery progression.
